![]() PLANES, PLANES AND MORE PLANES Grand Junction Offers Additional Air Service By Nancy Yackel
Grand Junction's location serves as a convenient hub for all of Western Colorado and Eastern Utah. Leisure travelers can discover amazing natural wonders: Colorado National Monument, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Arches and Canyonlands National Parks and Grand Mesa. Outdoor enthusiasts can tackle a challenging mountain bike trail or float the Colorado River less than an hour after landing. The region's expanding business market also finds additional flight options a timely asset at Western Colorado's largest airport. American Eagle, the regional affiliate of American Airlines, began two daily nonstop flights between Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Grand Junction in April 2008. Early afternoon and evening flights arrive from Dallas/Fort Worth, with departures scheduled for early morning and afternoon. Colorado's homegrown airline, Frontier, enters the Grand Junction market beginning in May 2008 with four daily arrivals and departures from Denver. "Frontier's new service is great news for Colorado, and it's even better news for travelers from around the country seeking to visit Colorado's top destinations," said Governor Bill Ritter. "We look forward to sharing the beauty of Colorado with even more visitors, whether they are coming to Colorado for the first time or returning for the 50th time." Frontier Airlines will utilize a new fleet of Bombardier Q400 aircraft on the Grand Junction/Denver route. The quiet, fuel-efficient, state-of-the-art, 74-seat, turbo-prop aircraft are ideal for flying within a 400 mile radius of Denver. "Our new fleet allows us to become the first low-cost carrier to offer service to regional destinations," said Frontier President and CEO Sean Menke. "The irony is that so many of these new markets have been in our backyard since we began flying in 1994, but we have never had the right aircraft to be able to offer the low-fare, high-quality service that is a trademark of Frontier." Allegiant Air will expand its current service from Las Vegas in late May 2008. A round-trip flight on Tuesday will be added to Allegiant's current Sunday and Thursday schedule. Las Vegas residents and visitors can easily escape the neon desert for a few days of a real Western experience. Four additional carriers also offer non-stop service to Grand Junction from major hub cities. Delta Connection/Skywest offers several daily flights from Salt Lake City. US Airways flies three daily non-stops between Grand Junction and Phoenix and United Express provides service from Denver International Airport. Grand Junction Regional Airport, formally known as Walker Field, is conveniently located near lodging, dining and Interstate 70, and the area's mild climate ensures fewer delays and cancellations than at high-altitude resort airports. Seven major rental car companies are located in the terminal – as well as ticketing, baggage claim and a gift shop – so the transition from plane to business or pleasure is an easy one. A wealth of adventures await discovery: from art galleries to wineries, dinosaur digs to wild horses, secluded canyons to lively festivals. Your ticket is just a call, or click, away.
