Grand Junction is ripe with unique and affordable events this time of year, from dinosaur-themed celebrations to live music gatherings. Pack your bags for a long weekend or more, and see why this Western Colorado hotspot known for wine, culture and nature makes for a cool summer retreat.

Prehistoric Fun at Dinosaur Days
Step back in time during the 22nd Annual Dinosaur Days, a family-friendly celebration of everything prehistoric. Dinosaur-themed food, entertainment and activities will descend on the Dinosaur Journey Museum in Fruita. Crowd favorites in past years have included an erupting volcano cake and an elaborate dessert designed to look like a dig site. This year's event promises more big-scale fun: A Friday evening reception features a concert and dance with musical group Ralph Dinosaur, and Saturday brings the Pteranodon Ptrot road race and TRIKEceratops Tricycle Race. All day Saturday, the museum offers "prehistoric" pricing with $1 per person admission. It's the perfect way to keep young brains stimulated this summer.

No-Fee Natural Wonders at Colorado National Monument
Witness Western Colorado's signature canyons, plateaus and formations at their most dramatic – and least expensive. The National Park Service will waive the entrance fees to Colorado National Monument during this event, making it the ideal time to soak up the beauty of this iconic landscape. Plan a hiking, bicycling or horseback riding adventure (there are trails for varying experience levels), or stake out a scenic spot and enjoy a picnic. Rimrock Adventures offers horseback riding. The park will offer several ranger-led programs throughout the weekend, and special events are planned. Camping is available, although campground fees will still be charged.

Free Concerts in Fruita
Enjoying free live music is a refreshing way to spend summer nights in Fruita. The town's Thursday Night Concert Series brings a diverse lineup of bands to the Civic Center Park Pavilion. The music spans several decades and genres, so there's something for every music lover. July and August concerts include the reggae, Hawaiian and rock tunes of Pineapple Crackers, the folk and bluegrass music of Finders & Youngberg, and Desert Moon's country jams. Pack your lawn chairs and a picnic, and settle in for the show. Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m.

Backyard Getaway to Grand Mesa
The largest flat-top mountain in the world, Grand Mesa is located at 10,000 feet, providing cool mountain breezes even on the hottest days in the valley below. Explore this local treasure by road and mountain biking, hiking through spectacular wildflower meadows and fishing more than 200 lakes (popular catches are rainbow, brook and brown trout). Many of the lakes have boat launches, making it easy to enjoy a lazy day on the water.
